Air Conditioning Then and Now

Can you imagine growing up back in the day when air conditioning either was non existent or reserved for only the elite or well to do?

Some of my readers grew up during these times and they aren’t that old either!

Conditioned Air hasn’t been around for that long.  It was invented in 1902 but wasn’t really used by the masses in a reasonable form or fashion until years later.  Air conditioning was first installed residentially in 1914; the unit was 7 feet high, 6 feet wide, and 20 feet long!

This week, we rewind to 1925, when air conditioning transformed the moviegoing experience. Whether audiences were watching Charlie Chaplin on screen or the first film adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera,” they weren’t just escaping into the story — they were escaping the heat, too.

Not very practical by any means!!!

Times sure have changed…

So many things have changed in such little time!

I’ve been in the industry since 1990 and I’ve seen three refrigerants be phased out not to mention I’ve seen S.E.E.R. (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratings) ratings go from 8 – 20+!!

I miss some of the Old Times, the old school ways of the past.

I can’t say I’ve been around long enough to work on a Boiler this old but I’ve seen and worked on some very old systems!  Back in the mid 90’s it wasn’t uncommon to come across systems that were late 60’s early 70’s still working!  But not very efficiently.

Today, the rule of thumb usually is that by the time a system reaches age 12, it’s heading toward the downside of the scale of efficiency and reliability.

The biggest reason today’s systems start loosing ground, loosing efficiency and breaking down, is due to lack of preventive maintenance.

If you have your system cleaned, checked and maintained yearly, you can easily keep them running efficiently for years past the norm!

For more information on Preventive Maintenance feel free to contact us any time.
